The Blue Stone Girl

The blue stone Girl Fantasy by: Shakti Ramnath

The start of the Journey              Chapter 1
There was a village in the deep, dark woods called Motfer.  It was a small village on the banks of the river Ronday.  All of the adults in the village were mean people as soon as the sun set.  You may wonder why they would start becoming mean.  It was because of the gemstone that was supposedly hidden in the mountains.  The legends described it as a tiny, oval shaped, blue stone which radiated purple light.  It resided in the cave on the Saeker Mountains.  The kids had a secret cave where they hid until morning.  One night, an adventurous girl named Martine decided to find the jewel and break it.  She decided to start out in the morning so she could get as far as possible into the woods before night fell.  All she took was: a candle, twelve matches, and a piece of cheese, some rope, and a knife.  She set out into the woods, having no idea about the dangers she was about to face.

The dragon in the log Chapter 2
Martine went into the woods with a smile on her face and a spring in her step, but after a few hours, she began to get exhausted.  She decided to sit under a tree and rest.  When she woke up, it was already night.  She noticed a strange glow coming from the clearing.  She mustered all of her courage and walked slowly to the clearing.  In the center of the clearing there was a log.  The glow was coming from the log.  She peered in.  A sleeping baby dragon!  Every time the dragon snorted, a blue flame would shoot across the log.  The log was charred black.  Martine was astonished that the log wasn’t able to catch fire!  She slowly backed away from the dragon and the log.  All of a sudden, the dragon opened its eyes and stared at her without blinking.  Then it lunged forward.

Cockatrice Chapter 3
Martine immediately reacted.  She jumped up and quickly started to run away.  She managed to run quite a good distance when she heard a “sneeze”.  It came from behind her.  She turned around and saw the dragon again.  “How did you catch up to me?” she asked.  Although she knew he wouldn’t answer, she paused for a moment to give him time to respond.  All the dragon did was look up at her with big, green eyes.  They just stared at each other for what seemed like a while.  Suddenly, Martine heard a rustling in the brush.  She glanced in the direction of the bush and she saw a giant chicken hurtling towards her.  Instead of chicken feet, it had a dragon body.  Martine sprang up and dived into a bush.  She remembered learning about something like this animal.  She thought hard and finally came up with an answer.  It’s a Cockatrice, she thought.  Cockatrices were part chicken and part dragon.  They roamed the forest.  They use their eyes to kill or petrify living things.  They could also kill by breathing or touching a living thing.  The only way to kill a cockatrice is by showing the cockatrice its reflection or when it hears a rooster crow.  Well, it wasn’t going to be morning anytime soon, so the rooster option was out.  The reflection was the only choice.  Martine sprang out of the bush and looked around.  Where’s the cockatrice? She thought.  Suddenly she heard footsteps behind her.  She turned around and saw the Cockatrice!
Morning Chapter 4
The Cockatrice wasn’t expecting her to turn around, so Martine was safe for that second.  For the first time, Martine saw the Cockatrice properly, though she didn’t look it in the eyes.  The Cockatrice was very ugly.  It had the bottom of a dragon and the top of a hen.  Its dragon bottom was scaly and thick.  The top of the cockatrice was feathery, dirty, and rough looking.  Martine would have died of laughing had she not been so scared.  She pivoted and ran in the other direction.  She found the dragon underneath a spruce tree.  She looked around and saw a pond.  She started running towards the pond.  Was it good enough?  She looked inside, and just barely could make out her reflection in the muddy waters below.  Then, she glanced around.  The cockatrice was hurtling towards her.  Martine held her breath and jumped into the water.  The cockatrice had to look around for her.  All of a sudden the cockatrice evaporated.  It had seen it’s reflection in the water!  Martine looked around for the baby dragon.  She found him still under the spruce.  She went towards him.  As soon as she got near him, he ran away.  Martine didn’t want to chase him because he might have a mother dragon.  By then, it was morning.  So, she started walking in the other direction towards the bog.

The bog beast Chapter 5
As she went through the clearing, Martine was suddenly struck by the feeling that someone or something was watching her.  She ignored the feeling and kept on going.  She walked for six hours, taking rests in between.  Soon it became quite dark.  Martine lit her candle with the matches.  She now only had eleven left.  The swamp felt musty and her feet squelched in the deep mud.  She began to smell something horrible.  She held her nose with one hand and held the candle in the other.  There was a sound.  Martine paused and turned around.  She could see a faint figure in the distance.  She started to jog her way through the fog.  She paused and turned again.  Now the figure was closer.  It smelled like a dog, which had been rolling in trash for six years and had never taken a bath.  Martine suddenly felt very frightened.  She remembered learning about this creature as well.  As she sprinted she recalled the time when she and her scholar, Radock, had discussed different creatures.  This creature was a Rougarou.  Like the cockatrice, it was able to harm you when you looked into its eyes.  Unlike the cockatrice though, this animal turned you into another Rougarou.  There was only one way to free yourself, and the Rougarou who harmed you, from the curse. You were to remain silent for a year and one day.  As Martine remembered all of the facts she had learnt about the Rougarou from her scholar, she noticed a large wall in front of her.  It was covered in vines and mud.  It looked like it hadn’t been even looked at in five hundred years.  Martine looked around wildly.  She was trapped!  Suddenly, she heard a growl right behind her.

 The mountains Chapter 6
The first thing she did was start to scream.  Then, she realized that the vines on the wall were sturdy.  That gave her an idea.  She started to climb them.  It was a very tall wall, but she kept going.  She could hear the Rougarou behind her.  It was breathing quite heavily.  When she finally reached the top, she looked around.  Right in front of her was a very, very, very, very, very, very, tall mountain.  Martine couldn’t even see the middle half.  There was a snort coming from behind her.  She didn’t turn around.  She then heard a cough.  She slowly turned and came face to face with… the baby dragon!  The dragon was looking at the ground and coughing up blue flames.  "I am going to call you Spike!"  exclaimed Martine.  All of a sudden Spike turned around and flew towards a large cave about 20 feet above the earth on the mountain.  She slowly crept towards the cave.  She peered inside.  There were gems everywhere!  Rubies, emeralds, topaz, amethyst, diamonds, pearls, gold coins, and many other riches littered the floor.  She tiptoed past the gigantic piles of gold coins and came face to face with… the mother dragon!  Martine gasped and started to stare at the 250 meter tall, 100 meter wide, green, purple-eyed dragon!  Luckily the dragon was sleeping.  Martine sighed in relief.  The dragon seemed like the kind of dragon that would be able to burn you to crisp in one go.  Suddenly, the mother dragon opened one eye and stared at Martine.

The fall Chapter 7
“AAAAAAAHHHHHH” screamed Martine.  The dragon had opened both of its eyes by then.  Martine started running towards the cave entrance.  She could hear the dragon right behind her.  Her entire back felt like it was on fire!  Martine turned around to see if it was.  Thankfully, it wasn’t on fire.  She started to run all around the piles of gold and crystals.  Spike was sitting on a gigantic pile of rubies and staring at his reflection.  Martine felt drawn to him and she picked him up by the tail.  She decided that even though he would probably cause trouble, he might be nice to have around.  She continued sprinting towards the cave entrance with Spike swinging wildly in her hand.  When Martine finally got to the cave entrance, the mother dragon was getting ready to breathe fire at her.  Even though Martine ducked, she wasn’t fast enough.  The matches and candles caught on fire.  Martine could feel her only piece of cheese start to melt. Since that was her only food, Martine reached into her bag and pulled it out.  She pooped the cheese in her mouth.  The dragon pulled in another deep breath.  Martine felt a searing pain spreading throughout her body.  She didn’t know what else to do so she closed her eyes and jumped to the ground below, the only thought in her mind was death.

The climb Chapter 8
When Marine awoke, the first thing she saw was a dirty pond right beside her.  Then she remembered that the swamp was right next to the mountain.  She was doused in water from head to toe.  “I must have rolled into the water when I fell.” She thought.  The mountain was right next to her.  She slowly got up and walked to the side of the mountain cautiously.  She looked up and saw the cave in which she had been in.  The mother dragon was nowhere to be seen.  Spike was on Martine’s left.  He was sleeping, oblivious to everything.  She patted him on the back and said “We have to get up that mountain.”  She packed up everything that had fallen out of her bag, and readied herself for the climb up the jagged peak.

Mountain Dwarves Chapter 9
As soon as Martine was 1/100,000,000,000 up the mountain, she turned to Spike and said “How much longer do we have to climb?”  Obviously, he never had talked and wasn’t going to start then so it remained silent.  Suddenly, he started to grow.  He grew and grew until it was the size of a regular dragon.  “What happened to you?” asked Martine.  The dragon stretched its gigantic wings.  Martine screamed with fear.  The dragon nuzzled her.  She decided to mount him and fly up the mountain.  She slowly approached him.  The dragon looked at her calmly.  Martine put one foot over him.  She was soon on top of him ready to fly.  Spike stretched his wings.  He soared above the mountain faster than Martine could imagine!  "We are already there?" she asked.  The dragon calmly landed on the very peak.  Next to Spike there was a cave.  Martine could see the glittering jewel inside.  She walked towards it, hardly daring to believe it was there.  Suddenly, she was blocked by a white figure.  There were more around her.  "Are you kidding me?" cried Martine.  " I killed a Cockatrice, managed to lose a Rougarou, was chased by a giant fire-breathing dragon, and now this?!"  The figure in front of her looked startled. "Ummmm... Sorry?"  It mumbled.  "We have blocked you for a reason.  This is the Mountain Dwarves home.  We cannot let you cross."  "Is that so mister.  What do you want then" Martine grumbled.  "GOLD!"  Martine was so startled by the intensity of the word that she fell backwards.  Then she realized all of the Mountain Dwarves had said it.  "Fine.  How do I find it?"  "Ask the dragon." said the main dwarf.  "I cant ask the dragon! He cant even speak!" said Martine.  "No.  Not him.  His mother."

The mother Dragon.  Again. Chapter 10

Martine looked around.  "Here I am again"  she said to herself.  She and Spike walked around.  Martine spotted a gigantic pile of gold.  She didn't get it.  The mother dragon was sleeping on top of it.  Martine crept around a stalagmite.  She reached the pile of gold.  She pulled out the basket that the dwarves had given her.  She picked one coin up.  No response.  Another.  Still no response.  Martine took a handfull.  The mother dragon opened its eyes.  She yawned and looked at Martine.  Then her eyes fell on the gold in her hands.  The eyes narrowed and looked back at Martine.  Martine stood there, stunned.  The mother dragon outstretched her wings and yawned.  She stood up and took in a deep breath.  Martine knew what would come next.  She dodged the fire and ducked behind a pile of rubies.  She made sure she didn't breath.  Soon she couldnt hold her breath any longer.  She exhaled.  The mother dragon looked in her direction and roared.  She pounced and caught up with Martine.  The dragon batted her claws and sent Martine sprawling.  Spike stared up at his mother.  The mother dragon stared back at him.  During that time, Martine jumped up and grabbed more gold.  The mother turned around and ran after Martine.  Martine had reached the cave entrance when she realized she would have no other option she would have to jump.

Finally, the gem  Chapter 11

Martine felt like she was going to throw up as she whistled through the air.  She had almost reached the ground when she felt herself being moved upwards.  Spike had caught her!  The mother dragon was staring at them with fury in her eyes.  Martine closed her eyes until she felt the ground thud.  She peered through her fingers and saw the mountain dwarves staring at her impatiently.  She threw the basket down and ran towards the cave.  She slowly crept through the cave when she saw the glow of the gem.  It gave a bright blue light.  She picked it up hardly believing that she had found it.  She raised it above her head and threw it on the ground.  It made a deafening crash so loud that Martine fell.  She could hear voices in her head.  She could see light swirling all around her.  Then all was silent.  The light had gone and the cave was pitch black.  She felt her way using the wall and saw the entrance.  She walked out into the sunlight.  "Well, that's done"  she exclaimed.  She climbed on the back of Spike and they flew off into the sunlight.

Epilogue

"Wow!  How was it?"  Voices all around Martine cried.  The children of the cave had finally come out in the night for the first time in ten thousand years.  "Well, it all started with...  You know what?  I will write it down!  Then people can read it whenever they want!"  exclaimed Martine.  So she did.  Spike curled his tail around his master, Martine.  "Well boy, lots of people will read my book.  It may even get published!"  You may wonder where the book is now.  No one knows.  Maybe you will find it.  But until then, we will always remember Martine as the Blue stone Girl
