Minecraft has many items. They are put into different categories.
The categories are:
Building Blocks: Anything that can be used to build objects
Decoration Blocks: Anything that can be used to decorate
Redstone: Anything that can be used in making energy with redstone (A block)
Transportation: Things like minecarts that can be used to transport
Miscellaneous: Anything from Lava buckets to Beams
Foodstuffs: Food
Tools: Things used for mining and such
Combat: Tools used for fighting
Brewing: Potions that you make to go faster
Materials: Anything else that you cant really use as much
Items can ALL be used to fight, but only the combat items actually kill faster. The items in the picture shown above are only seen in Creative Mode. In creative mode, it is not possible for you to die, you can fly, and blocks can be destroyed faster. Like the name says, it is easier to be Creative in this mode. You have an unlimited supply of items.
The other mode is Survival mode. In this mode, you can die, you start with nothing and you can craft. You can also craft in Creative mode, but there is no point, because everything you could want is already there.
Also, in Survival mode, there are mobs. I shall explain what those are later.
